Brando’s Own Words

EXCLUSIVES  JUNE 8, 2015
Why Marlon Brando Was Unlike Anyone Else, in Brando’s Own Words

An exclusive clip and poster for the documentary Listen to Me Marlon.

BY KATEY RICH

Marlon Brando was a lightning-bolt revelation when he first began acting on-screen in 1950, but looking back, it can be hard to tell why. His method-trained, natural style of acting became the de facto norm just a few years after his iconic performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, to the point that in some of his earlier films, he seems like the only normal one. But in this exclusive clip from the documentary Listen to Me Marlon, you can see how strongly Brando’s performance differed from a leading man from just a generation before, Clark Gable. And, in these never-before-heard audio recordings, you can actually hear Brando discussing the inspirations—including boxer Jersey Joe Walcott, of all people—that made him such a transformative performer. Over 200 hours of audio files, recorded by Brando with the intention of becoming an official film biography, have been provided exclusively to the Listen to Me Marlon filmmakers, providing an unprecedentedly intimate look at the famously guarded actor.

Listen to Me Marlon, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, opens July 29 from Showtime Documentary Films. Below is the film’s first poster, premiering exclusively at VF.com.
