Carl Jung Quotrs

Not only did his work transform psychology, but he also offered amazing philosophical wisdom about the meaning of life.

If you’ve ever studied psychology, you’ve probably come across Carl Jung.

Not only did his work transform psychology, but he also offered amazing philosophical wisdom about the meaning of life.

He is most famous for his theory called the collective unconscious. This is how he describes it:
“My thesis then, is as follows: in addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to certain psychic contents.”
As you can see, studying his wisdom can not only transform our lives personally, but it can transform society by reminding us that we’re all in this together.
Below I’ve collected 15 quotes that will help you understand yourself and humanity:
  1. “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”
  2. “Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
  3. “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.”
  4. “Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.”
  5. “The pendulum of the mind oscillates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.”
  6. “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
  7. “As a child I felt myself to be alone, and I am still, because I know things and must hint at things which others apparently know nothing of, and for the most part do not want to know.”
  8. “Mistakes are, after all, the foundations of truth, and if a man does not know what a thing is, it is at least an increase in knowledge if he knows what it is not. ”
  9. “The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases.”
  10. “There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year’s course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word ‘happy’ would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.”
  11. “The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves. ”
  12. “No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.”
  13. “Every human life contains a potential, if that potential is not fulfilled, then that life was wasted…”
  14. “It all depends on how we look at things, and not on how things are in themselves. The least of things with a meaning is worth more in life than the greatest of things without it.”
  15. “The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego, the second half is going inward and letting go of it.”
