The Bill Porter Story
Lessons Learned:
- Use whatever resources and talents you have at your disposal. Don't cry about what you lack. Don't waste time wishing for something you don't have. Use what you got, NOW!
- Create value. In these times the cover letter and resume probably will fail to get you where you want. You have to create a value outside of yourself. You gotta have something that someone wants. Now, go figure out something to bring to the table that they want.
- Recognize the many faces of value.
- Work hard. Pray harder.
- Take it Easy! It takes time to create something of value. Patience. Persistence.
Ten Things I Learned from Bill Porter: The Inspiring True Story of the Door-to-Door Salesman Who Changed Lives
|
April 2002
Bill Porter worked for the Watkins Corp., selling
household products door-to-door in one of Portland’s worst
neighborhoods. Afflicted with cerebral palsy and burdened with continual
pain, Porter was determined not to live on government disability and
went on to become Watkins’s top-grossing salesman in Portland, the
Northwest, and the U.S. This book was written by the woman who worked as
Porter’s typist and driver and later became his friend and cospeaker.
The “ten things” include Mother Knows Best, Persistence Pays Off, and
Know Your Limits but Reach Beyond Them. This is an inspiring story with
real-life lessons about tenacity in the face of daunting odds.
